Want to drop a couple pounds for beach season? Can’t afford to join a gym? Dying to party with Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz? Well, you’re in luck: the BBP’s office is hosting a new initiative called “Lighten Up Brooklyn,” and it’s offering free fitness classes to locals looking to get into shape this summer.
The program launches today, and is aimed to inspire you to check out 10 free city fitness classes from now until August 23. The classes are hosted by Shape Up NYC, one of the city’s complimentary recreation programs run out of the Parks Department, and include lessons in yoga, zumba, step aerobics and other fun fitness-ey things. The classes are offered year-round, but to sweeten the deal, the BBP’s office is turning it into a game of sorts — you can fill out a “passport,” take it with you to classes at Brooklyn parks and Brooklyn Parks and Rec centers and get them stamped.
If you fill out at least ten by August 23, you’ll get an invite to the Lighten Up Brooklyn Celebration at Borough Hall on August 28th, so you can party with Markowitz before he heads out of office, which should be…a thing. Plus, you can get a free 3-day pass to all the Brooklyn rec centers if you want to use their treadmills, ellipticals and weights, so this really will be the summer you get a sixpack. You can download the sign-up form and passport on the BBP’s website.

Are you going to have an edition of this for this year? I really love the idea of having fun while working out so I'm hopeful that you will have one for this year.
