Haiti earthquake-relief parties in Brooklyn

Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Jan. 20 at Brooklyn Bowl

Haiti’s earthquake is on everyone’s mind and with $10 donations through Red Cross or UNICEF just a click or text away, helping out the country’s needy can be as easy as 1,2, send (and this money really is needed). But for those who want to do something more, a few Brooklyn bars and venues are pulling together last-minute Haiti-earthquake benefits that are sure to get the checks flowing. Here’s what we found so far, but if we missed any, send them in comments.

The Bell House, Wed., Jan. 27
There’ll be a slew of big-name entertainers and guests on-hand for Strength Through Unity: A benefit for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. All proceeds will be split between Save the Children and Partners in Health. Guests will include Jimmy Fallon, NY Senator Diane Savino, Cold War Kids and many others. The $50 event starts at 6 p.m., but come early for some free food. And stay late (from 11 to 1 a.m.) for keyboard karaoke. Tickets and more info here.

Le Grand Dakar, Fri., Jan. 22
The African-inspired restaurant in Fort Greene (285 Grand Ave. between Clifton Pl. & Lafayette Ave.) is hosting a benefit concert by Dan Bailey & Living Rhythm. Donations for Yele Haiti will be collected at the door, and the 7 p.m. event’s organized by Hamptons for Haiti, which also held a benefit at Madiba Restaurant on Sunday. More info here.

Brooklyn Bowl, Thurs., Jan. 21
Q-Tip and ?uestlove will team up for a pair of DJ sets for the second relief benefit at the Williamsburg venue. Once again, all proceeds will go to the Red Cross Haiti Fund and Yele Haiti. $10, doors and show at 10 p.m. Blue Ribbon will serve Haitian-themed dishes all evening. Tickets and more info here.

  • thanks for listing these. i just wanted to drop a line that you should consider which organizations have operations on the ground in haiti and are able to do the most help with your donations. prior to this disaster, partners in health (which is listed above) was not well known but it is one of the most established humanitarian organizations in haiti. the importance of having operations "on the ground" versus other organizations is that they know the infrastructure and lay of the land better and can be most effective. the red cross is also a good bet because obviously the red cross is most experienced in global mass humanitarian efforts (hurricanes, the tsunami, massive earthquakes). just something to keep in mind. thanks.
