You know how on Sundays you panic because the weekend’s almost over, and you didn’t do everything you wanted? August is kind of like the Sunday of months. Summer will be over before you know it, and maybe you haven’t yet had that perfect summer night — basking in the ocean breeze, beer in hand, watching some fireworks.

This is where the New York Aquarium comes in. This Friday, August 15, 6:30 – 10:30 p.m., they’re throwing an after-hours experience called NYA@Night. Purchase local beer selections from Coney Island Brewing Co and choose from an expanded food menu (including sustainable fish tacos) while watching the Coney Island Friday night fireworks from the upper deck of the aquarium. BK-based DJ Alexie Gratia will preside over the turntable.

This is the aquarium, of course, so the admission also includes an early evening Aquatheater show at 7:30, after-hours viewing of the animals, and a special display commemorating the 80th anniversary of Otis Barton and William Beebe’s record-breaking, half-mile-deep Bathysphere dive on August 15, 1934. All visitors will be able to participate in the Tape Art Creatures of the Bathysphere drawing. Using tape, artists will be drawing the creatures that Barton and Beebe would have witnessed in their adventures below the water. The evening also marks the gallery opening of Drawn from the Depths, which showcases illustrations from the large collection created by Beebe’s team and held by the Wildlife Conservation Society Archives.

Admission to NYA@night is $11.95 at the door, or 10% off when you buy online.
