So you came to New York City with Hollywood dreams, despite the fact that Hollywood is way the hell that way (we’re pointing west, trust us). Despite that not making much sense, you cobbled together a movie with some people, a movie you’re proud of, but you just don’t know what to do with it now. Forget Sundance and forget TriBeCa even, why not submit your film to the Bushwick Film Festival? You live there, might as well become known at the bar as “that person who won the Bushwick film fest,” right? Right!
The festival itself isn’t happening until October, but don’t let that allow you to procrastinate about getting your movie ready to submit to the judges. The deadline is June 15, which will be here sooner than you know. The festival takes all kinds of movies, everything short of pornography basically. They specifically say no porno, so don’t try to screw around with that rule.
But otherwise, you’re welcome to submit your feature, documentary, short film or even weird new media projects that encourage crowd participation while they watch on screen. Because you missed the early bird registration, submitting a film will run you $35 each, but we’d say it’s worth it. After all, the festival has been running for 7 years now, so it’s not like they’re gonna abscond with your money in the middle of the night. All you need to do to submit your film is head here and follow the instruction to upload your work of genius. No need to send a 35mm reel in the mail, and they’d probably prefer you don’t do that anyway.
Plus, beyond the fact that winners get the respect of their peers, they also get “consultation on development, distribution and audience outreach” on the next movie you make, from industry professionals. Which you’d think is priceless, but is apparently valued at $5,000 according to the festival organizers. So hey, $5,000 extra dollars you’ll have for fake blood or post-production.
