“I hear Spike Lee’s shooting down the street!”
No really, Spike Lee is really shooting down the street. The actor and director recently announced a 10-episode Netflix update to his cult film She’s Gotta Have It on Instagram, with an open casting call this coming Monday, October 3 at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple (317 Clermont Ave.) from 5 to 8pm.
If you’ve ever wanted to be in a Spike Lee movie, or you just vibe with his sharp views about gentrification, now’s your chance to get up close and personal with the auteur, and rack up a television credit while you do it.
ICYMI in its filmic form from 1986, She’s Gotta Have It tells the tale of Nola Darling, a fine, independent 20-something Brooklynite who embraces her sexuality by juggling three suitors at once, all of whom want to have her for their own.
Filmed over the course of 12 days in Lee’s own stomping ground of Fort Greene, this film put both Lee and Brooklyn on the map, drawing more creatives to the borough. And his year, in honor of its 30th anniversary, Lee is ready to put a modern spin on his tale of black female empowerment.
You can read the full Netflix release here, where Lee states, “We are hyped that Netflix is onboard with this vision as Nola Darling, Mars Blackmon, Jamie Overstreet and Greer Childs DO DA DAMN THANG now, today in Da Republic of Brooklyn, New York.”
Anthony Ramos (of Hamilton fame) has already been cast as Mars Blackmon, a role originated and played by Lee himself. But many other leading roles are up for grabs, and one of ’em could be you! Filming begins October 11 and runs through January 25, so as long you’re down to make space for the gig in your work schedule if cast, show up at the Masonic Temple on Monday ready to show the casting agents how much you ‘gotta have’ this part.
Please baby, please baby, please baby baby, please.
