See some sweet art in the Domino Sugar Factory starting this weekend

And you thought you had to go to Egypt to see the Sphinx. via Facebook

You’ve been living here a few years now, but never summed up the wherewithal to sneak into the Domino Sugar Factory. And now that it’s a construction site/slated for demolition, you figure you’ll never get inside the mysterious old relic of New York’s industrial past. Well, you can stop crying now, because you’re gonna get to go inside the factory after all, and you can see some art, as this weekend will be the beginning of a two-month art exhibit called “The Subtlety,” from artist Kara Walker.

Yep, that’s right, art in the Domino Sugar Factory. Walker’s (free) exhibit beings on May 10 at noon, and will run through July 6, with the exhibit being open to the public from 4pm to 8pm every Friday and noon until 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Walker’s exhibit is called The Subtlety, and it’s being billed as “an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World” according to presenters Creative Time. So you can probably expect to feel bad about the sugar you’ve eaten your whole life, especially if you were somehow unaware of its role in the slave trade way back in the days of the American colonies. On the other hand though, you’ll be able to have hung out in the Domino Sugar Factory before it gets demolished, and you’ll also get to see an enormous Sphinx.
