UPDATE: LoftOpera is postponing Pagliacci to a yet unannounced date. The company, “had considerable trouble with our venue for the show and do not want to move forward under the circumstances,” General Manager Brianna Maury wrote us in an email.

It is a testament to the beauty and accessibility of Brooklyn’s theater scene that affordable opera can be performed in a former industrial space. No matter your feelings on “immersive” theater, non-traditional venues allow many groups to put on shows at less cost to their audience, and while weird venues don’t necessarily make a show automatically “immersive”, they often feel more consuming than a typical theater space.

Brooklyn-based LoftOpera, the guys and gals who are making opera cool again, have previously performed Mozart in East Williamsburg warehouses and thrown parties in Navy Yard chocolate factories, and now they’re performing Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci in a former bus depot out in Bushwick.

The two-act Italian opera tells the story of the OG sad clown and will be performed at 198 Randolph St., a single-story industrial building on a wide street two blocks from Newtown Creek. The show will have a Coney Island-inspired set, and every show will be followed by a dance party featuring DJ Svetlana Voice, Playbill originally reported.

Tickets are $30 and available online. Only backless bench-seating will be provided. Performances will start at 8pm (doors at 7pm) on September 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 and 26.
