Saturday, go fly a kite, celebrate NY’s parks

Yes, there’s some organized kite-flying on the schedule, but that’s just the highest-flying part of what looks like a chock-full free day at McCarren Park this Saturday. May 15 is It’s My Park Day in NYC, and the Greenpoint park is playing its part with four celebratory events: a kite festival, W’Burg Greenmarket cooking demo, free photo booth (for you and your kite) and the McCarren launch of some extremely eco-friendly coffee.

The sixth annual Kite Festival with the kids of P.S. 132 will include kite “doctors” on-hand to fix your tangles, along with some more grounded activities like arts and crafts, a karate demonstration and free face-painting.

Artists & Fleas Market will be at its  spot at Bedford & N. 12th (by the ballfields and tennis courts) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with 30 design and vintage vendors and that free photo booth we mentioned, which really is for you and your kite, by the way.

Saturday will also be Kickstand Coffee‘s first day setting up shop at McCarren with its bicycle-run operation. The brand’s goal is minimal environmental impact, and they’re serious—‘bicycle-run’ means the brewing too, not just the transport.

McCarren Park, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
