Nov. 16, 2012 Things are winding down at the Armory and many of the residents have been moved out. But there’s still a need to help out the people that remain, so especially if you can speak Russian, Spanish or Mandarin, sign up for Saturday/Sunday shifts or Monday/Tuesday shifts. The shifts last four hours and are all between 6am and 8pm.

Nov. 12, 2012: There’s a hope that the Armory residents will able to move out any day now, but until then, there are Tuesday/Wednesday and Thursday/Friday sign up sheets and a need for volunteers. They’re especially looking for Spanish and Russian speakers.
Nov. 9, 2012: The Park Slope Armory (361 15 street between 7th and 8th Avenues) has ongoing need for volunteers 24 hours a day to help out with elderly hurricane evacuees. They especially need Spanish and Russian speakers. Sign up for specific jobs in 4 hour shifts on their new volunteer sign up sheet. According to Councilman Brad Lander’s Twitter feed, they also are in need of diabetic socks. Are you a performer? Can you knit? Play a mean game of baccarat? There is a constant schedule of wellness activities you can get involved with.
Nov. 7, 2012: Coordinators at the Park Slope Armory said there was a surge of Brokelyn reader volunteers after we put out the call for help yesterday. (Go team!) The need for volunteers continues as more residents move in tonight. The need is especially great for overnight shifts, so if you’re reading this on your couch right now, it’s going to be crappy out tonight and there’s nothing on TV. Please go help out if you can.
The Armory is temporarily home to nearly 350, mostly elderly, evacuees of nursing homes in the Rockaways. Their staff is doing a great job, but they need 50 volunteers every day and 40 every night to meet the needs of the residents.
Volunteers help with general support, food preparation, daily routines, meals, social support and logistics. Shifts last at least 4 hours. Most needed are:
8 p.m. – midnight
midnight – 4 a.m.
4 a.m. – 8 a.m. (double shifts are of course welcome).
Anyone interested in volunteering should show up and report to the volunteer desk. You will receive a 20-minute training/orientation and more training depending on your assignment. Wear comfortable clothes; leave your cameras and kids at home. The Armory also needs food for the staff and volunteers. So if you want to cook, bake or bring some good healthy food for the staff that has been working around the clock for over a week. They would be most appreciative. Maybe you can learn to play chess or use this interesting story about the building’s history to entertain the residents. Or maybe you’ll have a love connection with Nurse Lauren.
