If there were any residents of south Brooklyn who were bitter and jealous seeing pictures of magical Canadian Pat Kiernan and others frolic at the McCarren Park ice rink, or weren’t bitter but just wondered when the Prospect Park rink would finally open, we’ve got an opening day for you: December 20. December 20 is the day before the official beginning of winter, the winter equinox on December 21, so Prospect Park is cutting it mighty close. But hey, whatever, skating rink!
Skate rental will be $5 at the rink, which is the same at the McCarren Park rink. And while it will be free to skulk around and not skate, skating will cost you $6 on weekdays and $8 on weekends, so slightly cheaper on weekdays than the McCarren Park rink. Until January 1, the rink will be open from 11am to 8pm on weekdays, with the opening hours slimmed to 6pm after the new year, 9am to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 9am to 8pm on Sundays.
More importantly, the rink will be available to rent for hockey at ungodly early and late night hours seven days a week. The rink will also host 8-week basic skills hockey classes, where you can expect to see Brokelyn’s Rocky Sullivan’s Invitational team, Check Please, sliding around ineptly. See you on the ice!
