As we mentioned yesterday, getting hit with a Nor’easter a week after getting hit with a hurricane makes being stuck without heat and power even worse than it already was. Here are some ways you can make people’s lives a bit easier.
Gerritsen Beach
Gerritsen Beach needs help badly. They were flooded during Sandy, and the electrical boxes in the neighborhood were ruined. They need 100 electricians to come to the neighborhood to help restore power and need the city to approve the work before reconnecting the houses. They also have to worry about just staying dry and warm, so organizational efforts are floundering. If you’re an electrician, or someone with a bit of organizational savvy, get in touch with Kathy Eng ASAP at (917)626-7978.
Red Hook
Occupy Sandy needs about 10 people to help at 10 am to organize a warehouse in Red Hook. The address is Super Movers, 83 14th St & Hamilton Ave. (R train to Prospect Ave.) Contact their Facebook page if you can make it.
The Red Hook Initiative (767 Hicks Street) needs volunteers to help deliver warm lunch and dinner to homebound residents between until 6pm today and between 10:30am and 6pm tomorrow.
Rockaways
Shore Fruit, in association with other Rockaway business owners and residents, is starting a kitchen that gives out free hot meals throughout the winter. Their current needs are produce, meat, grains and beans for making soup, cutting boards, knives and pots for prepping and cooking, rain gear for delivery persons, insulated bags for delivery, volunteers with bikes, volunteers who are comfortable working in kitchen, generators with fuel or funds to purchase these items. Contact their supplies coordinator, Josephine, at (917) 806-8618 if you would like to donate anything. If you would like to cook, prep and deliver contact Robyn, (646) 691-8013.
Park Slope Armory
The Park Slope Jewish Center (1320 8th Avenue) is having a pre-volunteering gathering tonight at 7:30pm for coffee and a little nosh before heading out to volunteer at the Armory tonight.
If you can knit, head over to the Armory at 6pm and hang with a knitting circle until 7. A volunteer that’s been hanging with them can’t make it tonight. Just go and sign in and break out your needlepoint skillz.
Sea Gate
The Coney Island community needs volunteers to help go house-to-house to clean up. Call Sea Gate Command Center at (718)705-9666 if you can help.
Gowanus
The Gowanus Houses are using 420 Baltic Street as a staging area. They’re still without power, so they need batteries. They can also use toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilet paper, and hygienic goods. Call Marguerite Scott of the Tenants Association at (646)330-7449 if you want to donate supplies.
