Party wave: Rockaway might get two more surfing beaches

It’s hard to think about right now, but we promise you: summer is coming. It might even warm you up just to think about the summer now, and to help that meditation along, here’s great summer-related news from DNA Info: the city is thinking of adding two more surfing beaches.

The additional surfing beaches being proposed by the Parks Department are a stretch from Beach 65th to Beach 67th Streets and another one from Beach 110th to Beach 112th Streets. According to DNA Info, the Park Department is basing the decision on community input, with the beach people of the Rockaways demanding more spots to hang ten recently.

While there’s no exact timetable for when the beaches would make the switch from swimming to surfing, the next step is for the Parks Department to bring the plan to the Community Board. If surfers are in luck, the boards won’t be stacked with pro-swimming factions that don’t want to give up any of their space to rowdy packs of surfers. Of course, all that being said, don’t forget that if you want to surf or paddleboard during the winter, we’ve got a winter in Rockaway guide for all of your beach getaway needs.
