Sometimes it’s fun to imagine what bygone PBS characters would be like if they lived in a 2013 Brokester’s Brooklyn. Like, Mr. Rogers downing $4 big Buds with the Land of Make Believe crew at Rosemary’s, or the Shining Time Station conductor (George Carlin or Ringo Starr, take your pick!) sneaking out of Pumps.Or gentle, soft-spoken Joy of Painting instructor Bob Ross, tagging Bushwick buildings with picturesque happy little trees and clouds. Well, that one’s the closest to coming true: this weekend, “takedown” master Matt Timms is hosting a Painting Takedown in Bushwick, and he’s asking local artists to bring out their best Bob Ross landscape. For cash prizes!
This Sunday from 6pm-9pm, Timms is inviting 20 Brooklyn artists to the Active Space gallery in Bushwick (566 Johnson Ave), where each one will compete to paint the ultimate modern-day Joy of Painting masterpiece. True masters can win up to $250 in cash prizes, plus there will be chili, Sixpoint beers and a real art auction at the end, so you can sell off some of your abstract visual anger paintings, too. Want in? Email chilitakedown [at] gmail dot com for more info.
Easels and canvasses will be provided, but BYOB retro hairstyle and jaw-dropping mellowness; the event is free, but beer proceeds will benefit City Meals on Wheels. So from all of us here, I’d like to wish you happy painting, and God bless, my friend.
