Jump Rope Girls, 23 years on

Celebrating the Jump Rope Girls documentary project. Twenty-three years ago, reporting for The New York Times, Susan Hartman wrote about a group of girls, who lived on her Brooklyn block. Athletic and graceful, they were expert Double Dutch jumpers, and often performed a rapping, clapping game they called “cheers.”

She studied typography at Reading University and lives in London. Grace Bonney is the founder of DesignSponge.com, the influential blog on accessible design, and the author of Design Sponge at Home. She lives in Brooklyn.

The Voltaire of the Nile: A Panel Discussion on Albert Cossery

In celebration of two new translations, The Colors of Infamy and Proud Beggars, New Directions and NYRB Classics present a panel discussion of the late Egyptian author Albert Cossery. With biting wit and an anarchist bent, Cossery’s novels explore the political and cultural pitfalls of the Middle East. The panel features: Robyn Creswell, poetry editor of The Paris Review; Anna Moschovakis, poet and translator of Cossery’s The Jokers; and Anna Della Subin, associate editor of Bidoun, and will be moderated by translator Alyson Waters.
