New Music Tuesday: Leaving home with Kid in the Attic

They actually like people

When I think of the music of Kid in the Attic, my brain wants to fit the band as a whole into the most romantic, close to home cubby hole that I have to put something in, which is the “Let’s just stay home and think about stuff” cubby hole. Historically, any time I like something or someone I think “Oh, they must be just like me and almost 100% prefer staying home dusting their book collection to interacting with human beings.” Often times though, that ends up not being the case. It’s especially not the case with Kid in the Attic, a Brooklyn based band led by Maia Macdonald.

Maia is currently on a tour that she planned completely around being able to attend the Women’s World Cup semi-final in Montreal. And while part of me is disappointed to learn that she actually LIKES leaving the house, I’m glad she’s out there doing it so she can fill her tank with life beams (life beams? whatever) and bring them back in the form of songs to all us sad sacks hiding under the bed.

On this very day, June 16, Kid in the Attic are releasing their debut EP Que Lastima (which translates to “what a pity”) via new label Rhyme and Reason. The EP was produced by Maia Macdonald and mixed by Frenchie Smith. Cici Harrison (Heliotropes) and Adam Christgau (Tegan & Sara) play drums on two of the EP’s tracks. Here is the premiere of “Long Distance,” the first single off the new EP.

Quiet, private times at home are when we organize all of the life data we’ve been mentally archiving while out and about, (when we do choose to go out and about.) From time to time I suppose it is necessary to flee the blankie and Netflix nest and venture forth to harvest new experiences. Recording things with our bodies, and squeezing them out via our chosen outlets like a salty sponge. Knowing now that Maia does in fact willingly admit to the fact that she enjoys being a social person, we asked her to describe the last time she was physically or mentally incapable of leaving the house. Here’s what she said:

“When I read this question I sank into a dark hole in my apartment floor. I was hoping I’d get to talk about ghosts, like Shilpa Ray did, but this is great because it gets me outside of my comfort zone. I’d like to discuss full paralysis. The last time this happened was about a week ago. It started with a minuscule, meaningless but recurring thought that kicked off an increasingly alarming domino effect. It was like when you notice a single ant on the floor of your house, but then look closer and see a line of a thousand tiny ants. I’m actually a super social person at times but can get sucked into this vortex swiftly, and with force.”

God bless Kid in the Attic. And God bless the Women’s World Cup. May all your balls fly free and true.
