Oscar cramming: cheap BK theaters

Double features may be a thing of the past (at least official double features—we do know people who routinely do the DIY version) but the matinee is alive and well in Brooklyn. A handful of theaters sell single-digit tickets at off-hours, while others, like the Kent theater on Coney Island Avenue, offer bargain seats all the time: $7.75 no matter when you go. (The Ziegfeld, it ain’t.) Here’s a list of cheap and discounted tix at theaters around the borough:

Cobble Hill Cinemas, 265 Court Street, 718-596-9113, www.cobblehilltheatre.com
Tickets here are normally $9.50 for adults, but $6.50 will get you in until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; all day and night Tuesday and Thursday, and for the first showing, until 2 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday.

Pavilion Theater, 188 Prospect Park West, 718-369-0838
Matinee price is $8.50 (before 4 p.m., except Sun.), from $12 regular, with $8 tickets for kids and seniors all day on Wednesday.

BAM Rose Cinemas, 30 Lafayette Ave., 718-623-2770
No matinee deals here, but students, kids and seniors get a break Monday through Thursday with $9 admission (normally $12). BAM also offers discounts at $8 for members of the Cinema Club as well as many perks with varying levels of membership ranging from “Movie Buff” to “Movie Mogul II.” (A recent perk: a screening of The Wrestler followed by a a talk by director Darren Aronofsky, who spent an hour dishing on Mickey Rourke.) See the “Cinema” section at www.bam.org for more info.

Bay Ridge Alpine Cinemas, 6817 Fifth Ave., 718-748-4200
Monday through Friday before 5 pm is $7, with matinee prices the same on Saturday and Sunday for the first shows only. Seniors and kids are charged $5.50 all the time.

Kent Theater, 1170 Coney Island Ave., 718-338-3371
Regular admission at $7.75 for adults and $5 for seniors (62 and up) and kids (2 -10). Wednesdays, all seats are $5, as are all seats for the first show on Saturday and Sunday.

  • I'm glad you're posting prices for seniors. Not everyone who needs to live on a limited budget is young. But we do read your blog!

    • Thanks for reading, Aardvark! We'll try to keep your feedback in mind on future stories.

  • i like the alpine theaters :) except sometimes the ticket lady is a little unhelpful... :\
