Love your library? Show it this weekend

There’s some cosmic injustice afoot when libraries are forced into rummage sales and rallies to keep their doors open. The Brooklyn Public Library, as you might know, has been facing a gauntlet of slashed-hours and proposed budget cuts that could remove $20 million in city funding, eliminate 363 jobs and shutter 16 branches. Not good news for the hallowed institution that, you know, lends free books and all. So how can you help? Get out and show your support, obvs. And do it tomorrow.

This Saturday, May 15,  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the central branch of the BPL is hosting Love Your Library Day, featuring a huge book sale, music, an author discussion and even a rally. The library will sell books for $1 through 4 p.m., and the house band Lost in the Stacks will play two sets. This is Brooklyn, so of course our library system has a house band—isn’t that worth saving right there? The library is suggesting a $5 donation to the Support Our Shelves Campaign.
