Local showcase seeking BK-based films for 2011 season

After You Leave, a film by Molly Schwartz

Spend time at a local international film festival, and it’s hard to miss the fact that movies are being made in Brooklyn. They’re being made here, they’re about here and there are scores of them. So, it’s good news for BK-filmmakers when festivals, showcases and screenings devoted solely to BK are looking for new material (otherwise, how would you get to see all the quality stuff?). One of these local showcases, the Brooklyn Arts Council’s Scene: Brooklyn, is accepting entries right now for its 2011 season.

Scene: Brooklyn: Independent Film and Media Arts is BAC’s initiative for supporting and showing off the “tremendous range of filmmakers and media artists working in Brooklyn.” Every year in May, Scene: Brooklyn holds a week of film screenings, talks, panels, workshops and parties around the borough. Local films get screened, they win awards, filmmakers hob-nob with peers and adoring fans, and after it’s all over, the same films get shown throughout the year at other Brooklyn venues.

Now, through Jan. 14, 2011, Scene: Brooklyn is accepting film entries for the May 2011 series. The initiative is seeking the following: “short and feature narrative films, short and feature length documentaries, animations, and video art from Brooklyn based filmmakers and artists.” Films must be 120 minutes or less, and while they don’t have to be about Brooklyn, they must be made by Brooklyn-based artists or shot entirely in the borough. Other guidelines and submission details can be found on the Scene: Brooklyn call for entries page, here.

Judging will take place between January and March 2011 by a jury of NY-based industry professionals. So go ahead and submit your hyper-local social commentary of an animated short now.
