When you combine the eternal draw of cheap tattoos and the current need to be active somehow, anyhow, in resisting the current presidential administration, the resulting party is bound to be popular. Party to Protect does just this, and on Tuesday the group held their second event since the inauguration, offering discount flash sheet tattoos for which all proceeds were donated to Earthjustice.
The $60 cash-only black ink tats were done all day by four artists from Williamsburg’s Magic Cobra Tattoo Society. Afterwards, there was a party next door. We got a chance to talk to a few attendees about how they felt about the event, about Trump, and their tattoo of choice. Here’s what they had to say.
________
Political science student Katarina Zayas found the event, “a cool way to protest. It’s a great way to help.” She got a cactus tat “because I like cactus’.”
________
“The is a way to resist the current political climate,” Alex Duarte told us, “the current administration plans to defund several agencies trying to protect the environment.” As for the fly tattoo he chose,”I’ve recently read the Kafka book The Fly. the book evokes a sense of alienation; much like certain communities struggling in the current political climate, like some communities in Brooklyn.”
________
We also got a moment to chat with Party to Protect’s founder, Sarah Hanson. For her, the event is, “more than raising money – it’s raising awareness. I want to make supporting causes that people care about sexy and fun. I want to make supporting causes that people care about part of their lives and something they are constantly doing.”
The tattoo aspect allows people to permanently say, “with tattoos that supporting this cause is a part of our life. People are making a statement with the ink on their bodies”
By Hanson’s estimate, Tuesday’s event, between the tattooing and the afterparty cover, raised in the range of $5,500 – $6,000.
