Bocce ball-boasting, quality bar food-serving, quaint & cozy fire-placed neighborhood mainstay Union Hall has been closed since a fire wreaked havoc on its insides (but, very luckily, none of its staffers or patrons) just before midnight on the final weekend of last month. The venue was majorly damaged, with performer Lake Ruth – whose show on the night of the fire was interrupted by the flames –telling Brooklyn Vegan that the, “Place is wrecked.”
Indeed, a photo of Union Hall’s post-fire insides shows the venue is going to need a whole lot of love before reopening, not to mention new flooring. Miraculously, not all of the books or furniture appear to have burned.
Union Hall announced on the 31st of March via its Facebook that,” in the short term we will be closed,” as damage is assessed and fixed. In the interim, some shows have been moved to The Bell House.
Now, the venue has stated that it’s, “looking like mid-May at this moment,” for reopening.
Almost two months without tips (if the venue really does manage to reopen in mid-May) is no small time span for Union Hall’s out of work staff, though, so the Bell House is throwing a benefit comedy show later this month with all proceeds going to Union Hall employees. The show, set for Wednesday, April 26 at 7pm, costs $20 and features Mike Birbiglia’s regular “Working It Out” show.
