Hear ye, hear ye: Shakespeare in the Playground returns!

If you have a kid, feel like one, or just enjoy good theater, catch one of Shakespeare’s best in your own backyard this June. The sixth annual Summer of Free Theater, presented by PLG Arts, is for Children Ages 3 to 103, which means it includes all Brokelynites, both the young and the slightly more seasoned. “Daydream,” a kid-friendly, 45-minute version of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will be featured in 10 free performances in Prospect Park’s aptly-named Imagination Playground, every weekend in June.

At the playground, a group of aspiring thespian construction workers meet to rehearse their play and, in the process, stumble into a battle between the King and Queen of Fairies. Puck swings from monkey bars and fairies dwell in the playground’s fountain. The timelessly captivating story unfolds amidst music, magic, puppets and hard hats — a Brooklyn kids’ twist on an old favorite.

This production was a top five runner-up for the ParentsConnect.com 2010 Best Theater Group for Kids in New York City award. Shows are every weekend in June (Saturdays at 11am, Sundays at 2pm) plus two additional performances Saturday June 11 and Saturday June 18, both at 3:30pm in Brower Park. All are free, no reservations are required, and seating is on the ground. You are encouraged to bring your kids’ bathing suits for a dip in the fountain after the performance.
