And here comes HBO’s show about Brooklyn

So the trend continues: first we had 2 Broke Girls on CBS, then I Just Want My Pants Back on MTV, then this hot mess out in Bay Ridge/Bensonhurst/Gravesend for Oxygen, and now HBO is getting into the game of depicting the young, broke, sex-addled life in Brooklyn. The new trailer for Girls came out a few days ago, highlighting more quirky adventures of Brooklyn 20-somethings, set in Greenpoint. But is it possible this depiction could be … tolerable?

It is HBO after all, and Judd Apatow is an executive producer. The official description calls it a “comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s,” from writer/director Lena Dunham. At least they actually filmed in Brooklyn, and actively sought to cast “crust punks.” I doubt we’ll be rallying around this thing, but the trailer talks about the woes of a 24-year-old weighing working for free vs. living off the parents, and the lets-be-honest-you’ve-thought-the-same-thing question about being the voice of her generation, which all might ring true with some Brooklynites (and also, that friend at 0:12 looks like Emily Gould?). What say you?

That will change as soon as HBO shows box-sets gets taken off the list of things only white people like (after all, it’s not like The Wire didn’t have any black people in it). The cart has to go behind the horse.

This show sort of seems like the show me and my friends could’ve made, but didn’t do first. And didn’t have the art/film connections to get produced by Judd Apatow.
