Have a scare-trade Halloween at Brooklyn costume swaps

BAD. You can do better

Still searching for that perfect glue-on mustache and calculator-machine-gun-combo to complete your stimulus accountability czar outfit? Maybe you’re just trying to figure out which version of Michael Jackson to be? (Our suggestion: there’s going to be plenty of Thriller-zombie-MJs. But will anyone suspect duet-with-Eddie-Murphy Michael Jackson?)

The next two weekends are loaded with various costume swaps that could be a cheap and quick way to get your gear together for All Hallow’s Eve, assuming you’re one of those people whose days are busy applying for jobs and working and stuff, not picking out how best to skank up your dog.

For the wee goblins, the Wyckoff Farmhouse Museum (5816 Clarendon Rd., Canarsie) is holding a kids’ costume swap as part of its Halloween Harvest in Old Brooklyn event Sunday from 12 to 4. The event costs $5 but the swap itself is free. Drop off your kids’ old costumes at the museum any time between now and Sunday, from 1-5 p.m. daily and you’ll get a ticket to exchange for a different one on Sunday. Good condition only. (And we’ll add one more caveat: No. Skank. Costumes. Please.)

Also on Sunday Oct. 18 in the Slope, there’s a swap as part of the Harvest Festival (Washington Park/Old Stone House, 5th Avenue between 3rd and 4th Streets). It’s got the added bonus of a costume-making workshop, where a designer will help you put an outfit together. Shotgun Amy Sohn costume!

These two events are terrifying in themselves, as they also involve all the family fare that is so ooey-gooey wholesome it also makes us actually consider have kids of our own: fresh cider, petting zoos, face painting, popcorn popped IN A FIRE PIT?! C’mon! (Maybe we can just borrow yours?)

There’s also a free kids’ swap planned for Saturday, October 24, at Midwood Martial Arts (1302 Avenue H) that  starts at 4 p.m. The number is (718) 258-5425 if you want to find out more info.

But fear not, ye non-breeders. Our friends over at Score! will host a more adult-minded swap meet with the Score of Doom at Trophy Bar in Williamsburg next Saturday. And they’ve dropped the cover from $10 to $5!

The event goes from 2 to 6 p.m. and donations are accepted through 5:30. They’re looking for your old costume pieces, wigs, props, full costumes, spandex, makeup, etc.—anything Halloweeny taking space in your closet that could better serve your fellow Brooklynites (and this means I can finally unload my lightly used Beetlejuice costume, circa 1990. Hand stitching, people).

We’ve also heard organizers will have two people dressed as Frankenstein lab technicians wandering around giving advice. Thematic drink specials include Bloody Mimosas ($5), Bloody Marys ($5) and Sangria Del Muerte ($6). But don’t forget to RSVP first.
