If you aren’t a college basketball fan, you probably didn’t realize that March Madness is right around the corner. If you are a college basketball fan, you already know that, since you’ve chewed off your fingernails from nerves in the march towards the tournament. But fan or no, the one thing we can all agree on is that pizza is great, but none of us can agree on which kind of pizza is the best. Park Slope fancy pizza place franny’s is bringing cold hard economics into it though, with a sales-based Sweet Sixteen tournament starting next Monday. Will Dick Vitale be there to howl while you try to eat? Maybe!
The tournament, which franny’s is calling Pizza Madness, works pretty simply. On Monday, March 17, a special menu of 16 pies is rolled out, each one crafted by a pizza chef at the restaurant. From there, it becomes a battle of survival and buzzer-beating ordering, and whichever eight pizzas are ordered most move on to Tuesday, where they’ll be winnowed down to four for Wednesday, then two on Thursday, with the champion pie being served for all the rest of March.
Now, we’re not saying that if you go on Monday and eat something that you really like, you have a responsibility to that pie to come back and order it for the next three days to help make it a champion. But we are saying, look at what happened when John Calipari abandoned his college charges before he got them to the promised land.
