Hey LGBTQ visual artists, get some work done at the Fire Island residency this summer

Make close friendships and flex your creative muscles, on island time. via Facebook

Ah, the romance of lounging around a beach house and occasionally “working on your art.” You’d think that this is a privilege for only the very rich, and usually you’re right. In this instance, though, you’re in luck, because you’ve got a chance at a fabulous residency on the beach. The Fire Island Artist Residency, an artist residency that caters exclusively to the LGBTQ community, is accepting applications for its fourth cycle. If you identify as any of the letters above, and the winter knocked the creative inspiration right out of you, now’s the time to pick up where you left off! FIAR offers lodging, meals and a stipend to help visual artists who demonstrate “new perspectives in contemporary art” get some work done.

If accepted, you’ll share and live in a work space with four other residents for a month. In addition to covering your room and board in a nice beach community, FIAR organizes studio visits and panel lectures with renowned contemporary artists. And you don’t even have to be a US citizen to apply! They ask only that your English be fluent (we’re guessing it’s because of the intimate residency size, and the curatorial events listed above.)

FIAR’s deadline is fast approaching, so be sure to get your applications in by 11:59 pm this Sunday, April 12. There’s a $35 application fee, but it’ll be well worth the free lodging and meals—not to mention an additional stipend!—that you’ll receive if accepted. (In an absurdly punfunny twist, the residency’s historic settlement property on the island was actually ravaged by a very real fire last week. Lodging arrangements have already been made to assure the residency moves forward as planned, but if you’re interested in supporting their rebuilding effort, you can donate an additional amount towards the cause.)
