Return to Oz & Under the Rainbow VHS Double Feature
January 13 @ 4:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
Got a case of the mid-winter blahs? Obsolete Cinema has just the thing – so click your heels together three times and repeat ‘There’s no place like Freddy’s!’ This month we revisit the land of Dorothy and the Wizard – a land called Oz!
First up is the bold and bleak 1985 sequel RETURN TO OZ, based on other stories from the original L. Frank Baum saga. This time Dorothy Gale (Fairuza Balk) must face the villainous Nome King who has turned the Emerald City to stone and threatens the whole Land of Oz with mass-extinction. (That’s so now!) She teams up with new pals Tick-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead and the Gump (not Forrest) to defeat the scheme and her pesky insomnia. Lots of inventive effects and scary stuff (even for grownups).
Then we skip to the lighter side of Oz with the one-of-a-kind period comedy UNDER THE RAINBOW (1981). The setting: the Culver Hotel, 1938, as hundreds of little people audition to be ‘munchkins’ in the new film spectacular (you know the one). War clouds are also gathering, and American Bruce Thorpe (Chevy Chase) must foil an assassination scheme on the Serbian Duke. Meanwhile studio assistant Carrie Fisher must keep the little thespians in line as well as find the ‘perfect Toto.’ As for the rest – you’ll just have to witness it. Yes, Billy Barty is there.
After this double-bill you may be left in a bit of a mental cyclone, but Freddy’s Happy Hour will bring you back to earth, warm and smiling, with your little dog too! And you were there, and you were…
