Read and discuss Scandinavian literature in translation as part of our Nordic Book Club. Each month we select a novel from some of the best Nordic literary voices. Discussions typically take place the last Tuesday of the month at Scandinavia House and online in our Goodreads group during the last week of the month. This week we’re reading They Will Drown in Their Mothers’ Tears by Swedish-Ugandan author Johannes Anyuru.
In the midst of a terrorist attack on a reading by a controversial comic-book artist, one of the attackers has a sudden premonition that alters the course of history. Two years later, the attacker invites a famous writer to visit her in a criminal psychiatric clinic and shares an incredible story — she is a visitor from an alternate, dystopian future. Despite his initial skepticism, the writer becomes increasingly fascinated by her story. And as he becomes more and more implicated in the woman’s tale, he also begins to consider that she’s telling the truth.
