We owe a lot to our brothers up north. If it wasn’t for Canada we wouldn’t have basketball, the alkaline battery (people still use those?) or Trivial Pursuit, destroyer of intellectual confidence. Canada has given us James Cameron, Ryan Gosling and Hayden Christensen (can’t all be winners). And, Canada has given us one very special person: Noah Bernamoff, Montreal transplant and founder of Mile End Deli, home to some of the best smoked brisket in Brooklyn. For the next two Wednesdays, June 24 and July 1, the Canadian-Jewish deli wants to celebrate two important national holidays with us Yankees and they are doing so in a way that even us Americans can appreciate; with food and drink specials happening on both days.
On June 24, also known in Quebec as Jean Baptise Day, Mile End Deli will be serving, for one day only, foie gras poutine. If you don’t know what poutine is, it’s french fries covered in gravy, with cheese curds sprinkled on top. Even without the foie gras it’s enough to make us consider Canadian citizenship (that and the free healthcare). On July 1, Canada Day, Mile End Deli will be serving BeaverTails. No, not actual beaver tails, a fried dessert favored in the Great White North; Obama knows how good they are, he wouldn’t leave Canada without ordering one. During both celebrations, there will be beer specials and more traditional Canadian delicacies on hand.
So while this is America and we are the best country in the history of civilization (suck it Rome), that doesn’t mean we can’t help our Canadian transplants feel at home on their special holidays that aren’t as important as America’s holidays. So before we get our America flag pants out of the closet and our Captain America shield off the wall to celebrate freedom, we should enjoy the culture of our northern neighbors, while saving a few bucks; that is the American way.
