Update: The Craiglist poster says she found homes for both this cat and a second one that magically appeared where she had found the first one. If you were ready to welcome a new cat into your home though, check out places like Brooklyn Animal Action or Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition. They’re almost always overflowing with pets looking to be your new owner.

Someone with terrible cat karma abandoned an adorable kitty after moving out of a Lefferts Gardens apartment last week. Shannon, a resident of the building, created a Craigslist ad hoping someone will help kitty out after she found her in the lobby. Shannon the Cat Rescuer called animal control but was told the cat would have to be euthanized within 72 hours if she wasn’t adopted. There’s no room in any of the city’s no-kill animal shelters and Shannon can’t keep a pet in her apartment, so things are getting desperate.
This is where you come in. We know you need someone to watch the Girls premier with this Sunday, and this cat needs someone to snuggle with and ignore simultaneously. The Craigslist post describes the cat as super affectionate, so she might not openly resent you for speaking to her in a patronizing baby voice while making her wear little hats. A cat that doesn’t bite you for dressing her in dumb outfits is pretty rare, so this master-human relationship is alive with pawssibility. Email Shannon the Cat Rescuer if you’re ready for a new best friend or have any ideas of how to help out.

Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition posted on its FB page last night that the cat had been taken in and was safe last night, and that a foster home had been found. I called the Craigslist poster last night -- ad's been taken down, and she didn't call me back. Assuming/hoping that's good news.
Great to hear! I've added the update
She appears to have posted an update: http://newyork.craigslist.org/brk/pet/4277397616.html
That post from Craig's List woman (Shannon) is 4 days old. He IS at the Brooklyn CACC, not been adopted. Has been tested and turned out to be positive - for Feline Leukemia. We need to help this kitty, find a group that will take him in -- give some money, etc. I don't know a lot of these groups (Only Hope was one). I'm very upset over poor Tony (his assigned name). Sigh.
Wow. Thanks.
As of 1/9 -- the kitty is at the Brooklyn CACC, listed as Tony with an ID# A0989171

I am an unaltered male, gray tabby Domestic Shorthair mix.
The shelter staff think I am about 2 years old.
I weigh 10 pounds. I was found in NY 11225.
I have been at the shelter since Jan 09, 2014. This information is 5 hours old.
. He is being treated for nasal discharge and will not be available for adoption til 1/14.
Hi, Denise,
How do you know that's the same cat? Not disputing, just wondering --
The photo of him at the shelter and the photo of him in the suitcase are the same. It is the same cat. BUT now he's been dx'd with Feline Leukemia, I'm so afraid the Brooklyn CACC will put him down. I know there are groups that will take in cats with Fel. Leuk., treat them. Just don't know any but two. Anyone who can help "Tony" as he's now called, please respond so we can save his life.
Just found out from a friend that the Shelter told him this poor kitty has Feline Leukemia, only a few years to live. BUT I know there are people who do care for cats with Feline Leukemia and with the right care they live much longer. DOES ANYONE KNOW of people or groups that can help on this???? Thanks.
RE this poor kitty -- does anyone know how to get widespread coverage of Tony's condition out there, so people can help? I don't have twitter and don't know how to make this go viral as they say. Tony needs our help.
Denise, can you please e-mail me at teresa [@} brooklynbackstretch dot com?
Thanks.
I just emailed you Teresa.
