Tomorrow is the day from Back to the Future II where Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel into the far off year of 2015, which is now (or IS it?). That civilization existed for the 30 years after the movie came out, and wasn’t ravaged by nuclear war or everyone eating a bad batch of ice cream is something to celebrate, so to mark the date, tomorrow Lyft will give you a ride in a DeLorean. For 15 minutes. And it doesn’t time travel.
Like other publicity stunts that Lyft and Uber have pulled before (Ride in a Optimus Prime truck! Hey here’s some puppies!), the purpose of the “Ride in a DeLorean” stunt is to make you understand that e-hail apps are hip and cool and not your grandpa’s taxi service. Is your taxi company merely focused on something like ferrying people from one physical location to another? BORING! Hey grandpa, try kickflipping into a free DeLorean ride so you can arrive in style. That is of course as long as the place you’re arriving in style is located in Manhattan (the only part of the city it’s offered in) between 11am and 5pm (the times the stunt is offered) only 15 minutes away (the maximum ride length). Think of how far you can get in a car in Manhattan in the middle of the day in 15 minutes!
Hey look, if this is what you want to do, go ahead and do it. Just be aware that this is the adult version of a coin-operated TIE Fighter ride in front of a grocery store, with the only difference being that unlike your time as a child, you’re much closer to death and should really consider if you can spare the time it will take to wait for and then ride in the famous movie car.
