The Brooklyn Zine Fest is coming back this month, April 26 and April 27 for the third year in a row, upgraded and bigger than ever. Last year the event maxed out with just over 80 exhibitors. But this festival of the weird and the pulp will have more than 150 exhibitors of writing, art and self-publishing crammed into the Brooklyn Historical Society. On top of that, the Brooklyn Zine Fest organizers are trying to elevate the event by holding three panel discussions on the state of the zine scene over the two days of the fest.

For those of you out there with agoraphobia, 150 exhibitors sounds intolerable but have hope, you neurotic misanthropes. The fest is splitting the participants into two days. On the first, April 26, there will be 75 exhibitors with names like Pillow Talk Zine (a one page comedy zine), Instant Rabbit (put together by three Korean illustrators doing what Korean illustrators do) and many others. There will also be a student section each day to showcase “the next generation of zine makers,” according to the fest’s website. What exactly makes a zine maker part of the next generation remains a mystery to us but we have an idea based on Moon Comix’s site that it has something to do with an inordinate amount of heart signs.

With all these new features it’s hard to know how the two-day fest will go but here at Brokelyn, the idea of buying really cheap reading material while not supporting the ever growing Amazon is definitely a welcome opportunity. In fact, we <3 such events.

Brooklyn Zine Fest 2014, Saturday April 26 and Sunday April 27, 11am – 6pm, Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn Heights, FREE
