In 1801, George Clinton was again elected governor, the city’s population was a mere 60,000 and the Brooklyn Navy Yard was about to start killing it, churning out devastating battleships like modern Williamsburg turns out Tumblr memes. That was also the last time the yard’s museum was open to the public. Until, that is, this weekend when the museum containing relics from the history as the Navy’s top shipbuilding hub opens to the public for the first time in 200 years. And it’s free!According to The Daily News, the museum includes such hulking exhibits as a 22,000-pound, three-story-high anchor from one of the last ships built at there, a chunk of a ship built at the yard that was blown up in Pearl Harbor and the ship where the Japanese finally called uncle at the end of World War II, say.
The museum opens on Friday and then will be open Wednesdays through Sundays, 12pm-6 pm. Located at 63 Flushing Ave., building 92.
