Welcome to Wednesday. That’s amost alliterative, kind of like the way that Wednesday is almost something to celebrate. Beyond being the fulcrum on which the week moves from “a lot left still” to “not as much left now,” it’s a pretty good day, but other than that it’s just another square on the board game of life you seem to keep going around on forever. Good thing you can distract yourself from thoughts like that with these fun things to do that were pulled from the Brokelyn Event Calendar.
SUMMERSCREEN PRESENTS: JURASSIC PARK
Why would you see Jurassic Park when we’re already up to the exciting adventures of Jurassic World? Well for starters, this one is 100% free, and you usually can’t go wrong with that. Also Jurassic Park has 100% more of America’s Sweetheart Jeff Goldblum as compared to Jurassic World. Also you can watch this one outside. Really there are a lot of reasons, but we’ll stop at three.
6pm, McCarren Park, North 12th Street and Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg, FREE
THE BOOK OF LUKE: MY FIGHT FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE AND LIBERTY CITY
2 Live Crew’s Luther Campbell is known for his fight against Tipper Gore and other censorious forces who had no one to fight once we beat the Russians. What you might not know is that he now fights for social justice and economic equality in his home town of Liberty City, Miami. Here him talk about both parts of his life as he rolls into town with his new book.
7pm, powerHouse Arena, 37 Main Street, DUMBO, FREE
ANOTHER PROTEST SONG: KARAOKE WITH A MESSAGE
Tired of the same old choices at your neighborhood karaoke? Hit up The Silent Barn tonight then, because you’ve got a chance to get radical on the mic. No, not the California surfer version of radical, we mean burning down capitalism radical, as you can pick from protest songs and only protest songs at this karaoke night. Just remember to get the right level of bass in your voice if you do a Public Enemy track.
7pm, Silent Barn, 603 Bushwick Avenue, Bushwick, $5 – $10
SASHEER ZAMATA PARTY TIME
Sasheer Zamata is pretty hot right now, what with being a castmember on Saturday Night Live. That doesn’t mean she still doesn’t make time to perform in Brooklyn with pals like Michelle Buteau or Blaria‘s Phoebe Robinson, but you should definitely take every opportunity to see her before she gets really really famous and Union Hall is too small for her.
8pm, Union Hall, 702 Union Street, Park Slope, $10
PUNDERDOME 3000
Hey speaking of people who’ll one day be too famous for their current venue, when’s the last time you went to see Jo Firestone host the Punderdome 3000? Brooklyn’s only monthly pun competition is still going strong, and its strange humor and earnest performances and delivery of terrible puns always make it worthy of a shortlist for things to do in Brooklyn. Lists like this, for instance.
8pm, Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, Gowanus, $7
