BK Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from drawing out comedy to Netflix and chili

When you combine comedy with live illustration, it becomes more like a funny college lecture. In a good way. Photo by Pat Moran, via Facebook

Well it’s a bullshit gray Wednesday out there, huh? Nothing to get too excited about, but at least there’s some good stuff to do tonight. And once it’s dark, you won’t even remember the sun didn’t come out all day, so you might as well not dwell on that. Instead dwell on what you’re gonna do tonight, with help from these picks from the Brokelyn Events Calendar. Blow off your work, make a chart of pros and cons, really put some thought into it.

SCREENING AND DISCUSSION: CRISIS HOTLINE: VETERANS PRESS 1
Veteran’s Day is as good a day as any to think about the horrors of war and how most of us are extremely isolated from it, and tonight you can get a bit of a closer look if you watch this Academy Award-winning documentary about people who work at a veterans’ suicide hotline. I dunno, nothing really funny to say about this one, but it could be good to go to so you get a reminder that this country is happy to ignore people who fought in our wars until someone needs a prop at a political rally or a football game.
6:30pm, Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepoint Street, Brooklyn Heights, FREE

PICTURE THIS! NEW YORK COMEDY FESTIVAL EDITION
Even if tonight’s show didn’t allow you the chance to see comedians turn around and get completely freaked out because they don’t know what kind of weird picture is waiting behind them, it would be a good pick. That’s because you can see a lineup that features performers like Ilana Glazer, Chris Gethard and Aparna Nancherla for less than a Hamilton. God that’s cheap.
8pm, Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, Gowanus, $8

DEVOUR HOUR: NETFLIX AND CHILI EDITION
On the other hand, you might also be thinking you’d rather have your comedy and eat it too. Well, not the comedy exactly, maybe some chili? I hope you’re thinking chili, because aside from the likes of Ali Levin, Jay Sullivan and Will Carey, you can also eat free chili. That makes almost anything worth it.
8pm, Hank’s Saloon, 46 3rd Avenue, Boerum Hill, FREE

BEER GEEK TRIVIA, SPONSORED BY OMMEGANG BREWERY
You spend enough time drinking and thinking about beer, so get rewarded for it. Provided you know more than “Beer = good,” Beer Geek Trivia will allow you to flaunt your yeast juice knowledge and get rewarded with admiration and brewery swag. The swag (and beer specials) come courtesy of Baseball Hall of Fame-adjacent Ommegang Brewery, which is kind of a weird coincidence given that this year’s Hall of Fame ballot just came out.
8pm, Glorietta Baldy, 502 Franklin Avenue, Bed-Stuy, FREE

SARA BENINCASA PRESENTS D.C. TRIP
I went to college in Washington, D.C. and nothing crazy ever happened to me traveling down to America’s capital. Sara Benincasa has a good imagination though, which is why she was able to come up with a novel involving shots, drag queens, pot cookies and sexual confusion on a trip to D.C. She’ll talk about all of that with Mara Wilson, and be sure to ask her why she couldn’t have scripted my college experience if you get a chance to ask a question. Also if you’re a veteran, let her know, because she’s promising “a special something” for any veterans in attendance.
