BK Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from confronting the robot agenda to dancing it out

What is the robot menace planning? Find out tonight

“Thursday, Thursday, gotta get down on Thursday,” sang Rebecca Black in her viral shame hit from a couple years back. You kids should follow her advice and go out and do something crazy today. Or at least something fun, which the Brokelyn Events Calendar can help you with.

BOOK LAUNCH: ST. MARKS IS DEAD BY ADA CALHOUN
Whether you know St. Marks mostly from reading about it in punk oral histories or you actually lived a life of drunken excess on the block at some point in the city, the one thing you probably think is that it’s not cool anymore. Author Ada Calhoun grew up on the block and wants to let you in on the history of the famous block, from its beginnings as a pear orchards to its time as a mafia warzone to its punk rock days, to show that everyone at one time or another has said St. Marks is totally over.
7pm, powerHouse Arena, 39 Main Street, DUMBO, FREE

DANCE THERAPY
Tough week? Oh man, really? Even though it’s been like 70 degrees in November? Well, whether its a long post-Halloween sugar crash or something more serious, here’s a chance to dance it out at C’mon Everybody so that you can forget about the week that was. Just look at how John Travolta left his problems behind on the dance floor in Saturday Night Fever and how that all worked out for him!
9pm, C’mon Everybody, 325 Franklin Avenue, Bed-Stuy, FREE

STEPHEN SILVERMAN: THE CATSKILLS
You’re no doubt planning your escape to the Catskills once New York City gets too hard or you want to trade in an “up-and-coming” school distract for one that’s a little more…well, you know…settled. Before that day comes, you can learn everything there is to know about the Catskills, which beyond being a popular Jewish vacation spot also has important links to American history in general.
7pm, BookCourt, 163 Court Street, Cobble Hill, FREE

DAVID A. MINDELL DISCUSSES OUR ROBOTS, OURSELVES
It’s been a while since there were any warnings on this website about the coming robot apocalypse, but rest assured that it’s still firm Brokelyn editorial policy that robots aren’t to be trusted. Professor and author David Mindell doesn’t seem completely against robots, but today at his talk looking at the increasing use of the metal menaces, he’s also going to be making an argument for the need for humans to be involved and not be turned into liquid goo to feed the robots.
6pm, City Tech Bookstore and Cafe, 259 Adams Street, Downtown, FREE

BETHLEHEM STEEL EP RELEASE/COLD SWEATS LP RELEASE
Release parties are always a great way to see a band because they’re gonna be all keyed up and ready to rock out hard, and that always benefits you, the audience. So tonight you’re in luck because you’ve got not one but TWO release parties, with the scuzzy and fuzzy respectively, rockers of Cold Sweats and Bethlehem Steel each celebrating dropping an album. Make sure you stay hydrated for this show, it might get a little nuts.
8pm, Shea Stadium, 20 Meadow Street, Bushwick, $8
