BK Top 5: The best things to do tonight, from an art walk to a hootenanny

Let art take you to some weird places in DUMBO tonight. Painting by Nadine Boughton, via Facebook

Alright, we did it, we made it to Thursday. Just get through this day and the weekend awaits. You love the weekend, it’s where you can do whatever you want with your time. During the week, things are a bit more limited, but the Brokelyn Events Calendar has a few things that are good for weekday entertainment. Take a look below and pick one, you won’t be disappointed.

MYRTLE COMEDY
The world isn’t always fair, so it means that Myrtle Comedy is going away forever after next week. The good news is they managed to pull out some big guns for their final two shows, with tonight’s penultimate show featuring comedians like Bretty Davis, Josh Gondelman, and Jaqueline Novak. If you miss this, there’s always the ultimate show next Thursday, but sometimes it’s best to see the second to last rather than the last, so as to avoid the tears.
8pm, Splitty, 415 Myrtle Avenue, Clinton Hill, $5

ROOTS N’ RUCKUS FEST: DAY TWO
It’s not quite the weekend yet, but don’t let that stop you from going to a music festival. Especially when it’s a free music festival celebrating the 10th anniversary of a rollicking folk, roots and blues night. In case you couldn’t tell, that’s what this is right here. Four and a half hours of music from seven performers, and you don’t have to pay a dime. This could be the best deal in town this week.
9pm, Jalopy Theater, 315 Columbia Street, Red Hook, FREE

ALEXANDRA KLEEMAN, RICK MOODY AND MAGGIE MESSITT AT PETE’S CANDY STORE
Hey it’s Hip Literati Night at Pete’s Candy Store, have you heard? Yeah, it’s like Ladies Night except instead of cheap drinks for the ladies, everyone pays the same amount of money for their drinks and you hang out and booze it up with other nerds while a trio of well-regarded authors reads to you. Tonight’s trio is Alexandra Kleeman (author of the post-modern body obsessed You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine), Rick Moody (author of The Ice Storm and most recently Hotels of North America) and Maggie Messitt (author of the immersive South African tale The Rainy Season).
7:30pm, Pete’s Candy Store, 709 Lorimer Street, Williamsburg, FREE

DUMBO FIRST THURSDAY GALLERY WALK
Yeah I know, a gallery walk in December, have I lost it? Leaving aside the mental health issues I refuse to get help for, no I haven’t lost it. It’s December but it’s not going to be paralyzingly cold out, so get out there and wander through some of DUMBO’s art galleries on this night when they throw their doors open to you. Even if you don’t love art that much, there are going to be refreshments, and “refreshments” is almost always code for booze when it comes to art galleries.
6pm, DUMBO, FREE

AN EVENING OF GRAPHIC NOVELS
You don’t only need fancy words to tell a story. You can also do it with fancy drawings, which is what graphic novelists Dean Haspiel, Gregory Benton, and Jennifery Hayden have done with their graphic novels about tits, street toughs and mythological Aztec gods. The three will talk about their work tonight, along with the work of the late Seth Kushner, and maybe if you’re lucky one of them will draw a quick sketch of you.
7pm, BookCourt, 163 Court Street, Cobble Hill, FREE
