This is the 23rd in our series on the venues featured in the second Brooklyn Beer Book. This week we’re going deep into Gowanus to feature Beer Book newcomer The Lowlands.
LOWLANDS
543 3rd. Avenue (between 13th and 14th streets)
What it is: Brothel-chic lamps, a hyper-pleasant backyard and (all-caps) DEALS make Abilene’s sister bar the perfect option when your barge runs out of petrol on its way down the Gowanus.
Why we love it: Let me count the deals: (1) a $5 Genesee-and-well-shot special, (2) a dollar off all draft beers and well drinks until 8 pm (3) a can of Miller High Life for $2.50, and (4) a bucket of six ponies for $10: Corona, High Life, Bud, Bud Light or Bud Lime.
Who to bring: Anyone who needs cooling down or heating up. The interior is suitably cool and casual (with turntables behind the bar, perpetually dusky lighting and a few well-placed knick-knacks to match the helter-skelter bric-a-brac), but when things start to get a little too frigid you can always head to the back, where picnic benches and a thoroughly dappling sun seem to have a kind word for everybody.
What to order: The Bloody Mary/Spicy-Tomato-Tini is top-of-the-line, and on weekends before 5 it can be yours for a paltry $6 (even for your paltriest $6.) At all other times it will run you a still very reasonable $7.
Lowlands Fun Fact: Lowlands hosts live music on the third Wednesday of every month, and a dance party (presided over by the Barney Fifiest of them all: DJ Don Knotts) on the last Saturday of every month.
