We’re all upset that summer is drawing to a close, but teachers throughout the city are especially bitching right now because their two-month-plus vacation is ending in just two short weeks. That’s right, kiddos and profs, the first day of the (public) school year is Thursday, Sept. 8. But luckily for the teachers (we don’t have any news with which to console the kids, unfortunately), there is one silver lining to going back to work: once school starts, a number of Friday teacher happy hours at Brooklyn bars start back up again as well.
It’s good to get drunk with your fellow teachers, so you can commiserate with those who share your particular grievances—unlike your non-teacher friends, who are done with hearing you complain about your “kids.” But we at Brokelyn, and the select bars providing the deals, appreciate your hard work; we can only imagine how molding young, or really, any minds, must drive you to drink!
Check out these six BK bars providing opportunities to get f-cked up for less after a rough week in the classroom —they’re all on Fridays, which we guess is good, because teaching hungover really sounds like hell. Let us know in the comments if we missed any!
Pour House of Bay Ridge
7901 3rd Ave.
Bay Ridge
Fridays, 3-7pm
Every Friday during the school year, the Bay Ridge pub hosts happy hour for teachers—with drink specials and complimentary food—and also by teachers, who guest bartend during it. They just put out a call for teacher-bartenders on Facebook, which might appeal to those who’d like to relive their pre-teacher service industry glory days, if only for a few hours a week!
________
Pacific Standard
82 4th Ave
Park Slope
Fridays, noon-8pm
Teacher happy hour kicks off early on Fridays, at noon, for any teachers who might be playing hooky, and goes until 8pm. Those who say they are teachers (it’s the honor code system!) can get $2 off drafts, wine and well drinks. The back room might remind you of your classroom, but in a good way, because you’ll be seeing it through bleary, overworked, yet happily drunk eyes.
________
The Way Station
683 Washington Ave.
Crown Heights
Fridays, 4-8pm
It’s fitting that the “Doctor Who bar” and haven for all things nerd would host a “Teachers Appreciation Happy Hour” for NYC public school teachers. Beyond drink specials like $4 drafts and wells, it’s full of fun quirks, like brown bag snack packs and a goody pack with free teacher supplies. Finally, the bucks collected in the Douche Jar behind the bar, which fills up with fines charged to bar patrons for, well, douchey behavior, get donated to an “emergency teacher fund” meant to cover the financial woes common in the life of a teacher, such as parking tickets and budget cuts. As far as how they distribute said fund, well, it might take an unofficial school board to decide.
________
Longbow Pub & Pantry
7316 Third Ave.
Bay Ridge
Fridays, 2-8pm
Every Friday from 2-8pm during the school year, the Welsh football go-to of Bay Ridge shines a little love on teachers of New York with $5 Stella Artois and Stella Cidre, glasses of pinot grigio and merlot and well drinks. If you get too wild, be sure to soak up the booze with an order of their fish and chips.
________
Threes Brewing
333 Douglas St.
Gowanus
Fridays, 3-8pm
Every Friday from 3 to 8pm during the school year is Teacher Appreciation Day at the Gowanus brewery and event space. The specials cater to group teacher hangs, with $35 pitchers of apple cider sangria, $10 pitchers of house brews (rotating), $15 tap wine carafes and $5 wells for those who need the hard stuff. Gotta flash that valid teacher ID to qualify.
________
Prospect Bar and Grill
545 5th Ave.
Park Slope
Fridays, 3-8pm
Close out the week at Prospect’s Teacher Happy Hour, every Friday from 3-8pm, while filling up on comfort food like wings and chicken tenders.
Brooklyn teachers, did we miss any? Let us know in the comments!
