Aspiring scoops wanted for free journalism camp

Even these guy's had to start somewhere.

While some of your kids’ friends are camping this summer with future-MBAs or prep pre-pre-pre meds, you could instead send them off to one near and dear to our own hearts that’s a hell of a lot more fun than endless woodworking: journalism camp! The Local, the New York Times/CUNY hyperlocal blog collaboration, is hosting a completely FREE three-day workshop for high school students interested in learning about reporting, blogging, photography and video starting July 25. The teens pick up reporting skills in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill neighborhood, and get a chance to walk away with some clips. Sure, journalism isn’t the most profitable career path, but if there’s one skill it teaches you that’s of immeasurable value in this city, it’s learning how to call people on their bullshit.

This workshop will be held at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School from July 25 to July 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be provided. The Local cites a few blog posts produced by teens at last year’s workshop: herehere and here. After the workshop, participants might become regular contributors. You don’t have to live in the neighborhood to participate, but you must be able to get to Fort Greene and Clinton Hill regularly to report stories.

To sign up, email The Local’s editor Indrani Sen at indrani.sen@journalism.cuny.edu.
