9 streaming movies to help you hide from the snow

big fan
If you haven’t seen Patton Oswalt in Big Fan yet, a snowstorm is as good a time as any.

So, you’re snowed in during Winter Storm Pax, which for the record, is not related to the more favorable Pax. Well, once you’re done posting on social media as if you’ve never seen snow in winter before, here are some cozy movies to cuddle up with, provided the icy tempest doesn’t down your internet signal. I chose a list of 3 films each from 3 different stream platforms, a bit of comfort, a bit of moody-broody, and a few of my personal favorites that rise above the muck.

NETFLIX

The Miami Connection -It’s like the 1980s sent a perfect summation of 1980s action movie tropes to 30 years in the future. Will satisfy all trashy 80s video store cravings. See also: Big Trouble in Little China

Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me -Documentary about one of the most criminally underrated and doomed bands in history: Big Star

Greenberg -I was going to recommend 2013’s Frances Ha, which is fine and all, but then I remembered that Greenberg was just a little deeper and sadder and funnier and meaner. And the best thing about Frances Ha is the outstanding Greta Gerwig, and she’s in Greenberg too so you got nothing to lose.
HULU +

Paris Texas -Winter is the perfect time for somber, desolate movies with scant dialogue. And Harry Dean Stanton.

Solaris (1972) -Because you’re inside an airlock, slowly going insane.

Burden of Dreams -If you think plodding to the G in the snow is bad, imagine dragging a boat over a mountain in South America with everyone pissed off at you, including the psychotic actor you’re trying to make a movie with. Just kidding, walking to the G is worse, you have the worst problems.

CRACKLE

Big Fan -Because Staten Island, and now that football season is over, it might be a good time to take a look in the mirror.

In a Lonely Place -Humphery Bogart’s best performance, and his favorite of his own work. Directed by Nicholas Ray, who made Rebel Without a Cause, among other things.

The Prisoner -OK, one TV series. But because you’re stuck inside, and you have drugs (hopefully), you can just binge watch this weird piece of strange, cult British sci-fi.

I wish it was so, but Burden of Dreams is not on Netflix. Probably because of the misery that is all around us. The trees here are in misery and the birds are in misery; I don’t think they sing, they just screech in pain.
