If you’ve been sitting in front of what’s left of your Google Reader waiting for some kind of life-changing news that’ll break through today’s faux-winter gloom, HERE IT IS, INTERNET: the MTV Video Music Awards are coming to Brooklyn this summer!

That’s right — the show that launched a thousand Kanye memes is headed for our beloved borough come August 25th, and it’ll be held at (surprise) the Barclays Center. No host has been announced for the show yet, but since a gurgling baby Blue Ivy drooling on the stage for three hours would probably be more entertaining than last year’s terrible Kevin Hart performance, our hopes are high. Plus, New York-based VMAs are always entertaining — Britney and Madonna made out at Radio Music Hall at the VMAs in 2003, and the infamous 2009 Kanye/Taylor Swift showdown happened in Manhattan, too. And since this is Brooklyn, well, anything can happen. A duet between Lena Dunham and Miley Cyrus, perhaps?

Plus, news of the Brooklyn VMAs has brought us another choice press statement from Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz: “From hip-hop to hipsters, Jay Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the ‘spotlight’ on MTV. Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca-the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country, and has played a crucial role in the careers of some of 2013’s biggest bands, like Fun and the Lumineers… I’m so thrilled that I’ll probably get ‘no sleep till Brooklyn’ hosts the VMAs!” Yep.
