This ‘Girls’ Craigslist ad is the future. Get used to it

TV: teacher, mother, secret lover. Despite the fact that we don’t own one, we still try to keep up with what’s going on in the world of the pictocube. One thing we strenuously try to avoid though, is aping the characters on TV shows. This is mostly accomplished by watching shows with sociopath protagonists, like ArcherMad Men and Breaking Bad. We’d argue that Girls should be on that list, since even at their most sympathetic, the characters on that show are still terrible. But, a lot like how dudes still want to be Don Draper despite the fact that he’s just awful, people in their 20s want to be, or think they are, Hannah Horvath. So of course someone advertised an open room in their apartment as being a scene straight out of Girls.

Jezebel found the ad, which at least has a little bit of a sense of humor about itself, beginning:

“Are you a fan of the HBO TV show Girls? Do you want to be happy and to stop living experiences for other people? Do you believe that your life represents a commentary on the state of the Caucasian, 20-something, used-to-be-upper-middle-class-but-now-only-sometimes-benefit-from-the-wealth-and-status-of-your-parents demographic? Well search no further; we have the perfect living experience for you.”

It goes on to note that one of the roommates is actually named Hannah and the other one is a sassy gay dude. Like Elijah we guess? Tamping down the rage-fuel effect of the ad is the fact that its writers are clearly taking the piss out of people. Adding rage fuel is the fact that a couple of lousy early 20s people, one of whom self-identifies as an artist can afford $1500/month rent. But at least this ad is a joke. Just you wait. Once those Girls bus tours start up, you’re going to be seeing completely straight-faced Craigslist ads like this. If not from people looking for a subletter, then from brokers who correctly assume that there’s a sucker born every minute
