Taste the thrills: Smorgasburg is coming to Coney Island

Lately when we’ve had announcements about new businesses coming to Coney Island, it’s been something like a giant Subway or a Wahlburgers or some other big chain that’s trying to complete Coney’s transformation to Myrtle Beach. For once though, we’ve got some news about a local business setting up shop there, with word from the Brooklyn Flea that they’re going to be hosting 12 vendors and two bars in shipping containers they’re setting up in a previously empty lot by the boardwalk. Now that’s news we can really sit back and savor.

The Observer had the news yesterday about the deal for the food space in Coney, with the lot between Bowery Street, Stillwell Avenue and West 15th Street being transformed not only by the food vendor shipping containers but also by art walls curated by Jeffrey Deitch. We reached out to Smorgasburg to find out just who the vendors setting up shop are going to be, and needless to say, it’s a pretty good list. The shipping containers will house the following vendors and offerings:

Bon Chovie: Beer-battered fish and chips, shrimp and chips, and grilled salmon burger along with their classic chovies.

Dan & John’s Wings: The usual buffalo wing offerings, but now with the addition of veggie seitan wings and boneless chicken wings.

El Super: Beer-battered tacos (cod, shrimp, jalapeno popper w/salt cod, potato, cheddar), “surf chips and salsa” with tortilla-crusted squid, and mahi mahi ceviche tostada.

Excell Kingston Eatery: Jerk chicken and fish, as well hacked fresh coconuts.

Home Frite: Fries

Mile End: A burger and hot dog stand in a direct challenge to Wahlburger’s and Nathan’s, with plans for other offerings as the summer goes on.

Mofongo: Plantain-based Puerto Rican street food like pork sliders on plantain buns.

Queen Cobra Thai: A mix of papaya salad, Thai duck sausage, a curry, and pad thai.

Red Hook Lobster Pound: The Lobster Pound will have plenty to offer: A lobster BLT with lobster, bacon and apple-chipotle mayo; a tuna melt with yellowfin tuna salad, melted cheddar and homemade fried onions; a Cobbster Salad (classic cobb with lobster, egg, bacon, tomato blue cheese and avocado dressing); peel and eat shrimp; and New England clam chowder.

La Newyorkina: For dessert, there’s paletas, chamoyadas, agua frescas.

In case you were counting and noticed that’s ten vendors and not twelve, a Smorgasburg rep told us that they’re still looking for one food vendor and one dessert vendor to help them fill out their lineup. If that vendor could be you, shoot them an email at info [AT] brooklynflea.com. The lot will be full of food from 11am to 8pm starting May 22 through Memorial Day, then weekends only for the next four weekends, followed by a seven day per week run from June 22 through Labor Day. Not that you should be eating there anyway, but once this opens, you really won’t have an excuse to go to that Subway.
