Freelance Whales, tomorrow's BBQ Blowout DJs

You know, we were just thinking how awesome it would be to spend the summer at DJ’d parties sampling bbq recipes from Brooklyn’s top foodies. And, wait… wait… oh, look at that, there goes the iPod case. Tomorrow night, Jun. 16, at Good Company in Williamsburg, food blogger Cathy Erway and the chefs of Mrs. Kim’s will be grilling the meat for the summer’s second BBQ Blowout. The series of DJ’d bbq fests, presented by Finger on the Pulse and NY Mag, runs through August with four more nights of food from Fatty Cue, Sam Mason, Mile End Delicatessen and Frankies Spuntino (and a new DJ each night too). But tomorrow, the show’s all Erway and Freelance Whales. Plates are $5 and the rest of the night’s free, including iPhone and iPod cases from co-sponsor Incase. Food at 7, party til 11.

You asked for it, we got it. It’s a store, cooking school and butcher shop all-in-one. It’s The Meat Hook, the newest extension of The Brooklyn Kitchen, helmed by one of Brooklyn’s most renowned foodies, Tom Mylan. And it’s given us (you) a $75 gift card for the RAFFLE OF THE CENTURY. While the actual term “meat-hook” isn’t high on the trendy or appetizing scale, think of it like this: To be called something so graphic and carnivorous-sounding means that it’s a) trendy enough to have such a daring name, 2) good enough to make it an instant success and 3) not joking about this meat. Cheaper ways to learn digi-design

Picture 16If being able to type 90WPM is the most impressive computer skill you have, it may be difficult (i.e. impossible) to stay competitive in today’s hyper-digital workplace. Knowing how to use Photoshop, InDesign, FinalCut Pro and other programs can be beneficial when applying to jobs or landing freelance gigs. Though Pratt has an amazing list of computer graphics courses for the serious (and well-funded) student, some of us just want to dabble. So we did a price check to find the best rates on digital-design and video-editing classes around town. Got another lead? Please let us know in the comments. (more…)

picture-115If it’s spring in Brooklyn, there must be an open-studio event somewhere. This weekend there are two: an art crawl in Bushwick, where you’ll see the likes of this elegantly twisted painting from Hannah Mishin (That girl’s on a mission!) along with work presented by 249 other galleries and artists. Open studios are tomorrow and Sunday from noon to 7. Get more info and a downloadable map here. Then there’s the Atlantic Avenue ArtWalk, with loads of artists and deals at 35 area restaurants. From 1 to 6 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. (more…)
