To celebrate International Women’s Day I met up with some female entrepreneurs who are changing the face of business in Greenpoint. Vintage fashion dominates Manhattan Ave., creating a community of fashion loving business women who truly support each other. Female owned ventures are gaining ground in Brooklyn with a 39 percent increase in the last five years, according to a study from the Center for an Urban Future. RE/Dress, the plus-size Boerum Hill vintage store beloved by size 22 Mrs. Cleavers everywhere, is closing its doors on Sunday.  While the enterprise will live on as a web site, the owner is shuttering the store for financial reasons. Plus she’s leaving town for the West Coast next year. (Um, what???) Here’s what she says on the RE/Dress web site:

Part economics, part life change. I’ve worked hard for the last 3 years to make Re/Dress NYC a sustainable business and while we’ve had our great sales days and wonderful shopping events, the truth is our expenses are higher than our income. (more…)
