What’s better than drinking for free? Sex? Depends. A transcendent live music experience. Eh, take it or leave it. But opportunities to drink for nothing don’t just fall out of the trees. One did fall into our email box though. Williamsburg’s The Woods just got a new, possibly stuffed, possibly alive, fox, and they’re giving away a $500 bar tab to the person who can give it the best name. However, there’s a catch: you can only drink that $500 away during their weekday happy hours from 4-10. And you have less than a month to get through your tab. (more…)
As long as we’re on the subject of Brooklyn, real estate and what’s fair and not fair, wouldn’t it be nice to be involved before decisions like this get too far along for you to make an impact? After all, nothing is worse than impotently bitching and moaning about something that you might have had an opportunity to change for the better. Neighbors Allied for Good Growth feel that way too (well, they probably say it nicer than we did), and to that end, are having a community meeting tonight at The Woods (48 South 4th Street) to discuss the new plans for the Williamsburg waterfront. And you won’t be spitting the wind here: the developers will be there too. (more…)
The problem with throwing a Super Bowl party in Brooklyn apartments is one of simple logistics: it requires space you don’t have. Even if your Bushwick loft does have the capacity to host a couple dozen drunks and a fifteen-foot hoagie, chances are you and your nine roommates haven’t gone in for basic cable, and maybe even a couple of them loathe sports and the average loud, loyal football fan. You’ve already shelled out to learn about football, so what do you do to keep your investment from being a waste? As with so many Brooklyn conundrums, where-to-watch-the-Super-Bowl is a question best answered with a trip to the bar. Here’s a list of spots showing the Big Game. (more…)
Did the rain keep you from some of this past weekend’s hottest events? Make up for it with the usual chock-full week of free and cheap tunes. Show your love for Brooklyn based musician/comedian Reggie Watts at Fort Greene Park. And while you’re at it, stop by Zebulon for some jazzy improvisationals with Mostly Other People do the killing. Nearly everything we’ve listed this week is free, so get out there and listen to something new already. (more…)
Although it’s a short Labor-Day week, there’s no lack of boogey-inducing music to get you through to the next days off. Happy Birthday is rolling through with a free show tonight at Brooklyn Bowl. Think Beach Boys meet the Dirty Projectors. Then The Glasslands has got a pretty mean Wednesday night line-up with, among others, the ever-jovial Video Daughters (no one sings the Tri-State Area blues like they do). You know the deal, nothing’s more than $5. (more…)
Not the most hopping week ever for cheap music in the BK atmosphere, but there’s still plenty to keep your attention. Definitely head out to tonight’s open jam session (Aug. 30) at the Slope’s Puppets Jazz Club. We hear it’s facing some hard times and could use the support. What else? Go ahead and wake up beautiful with the Pioneers of Seduction, or get into some do-it-yourself, home-studio-sound head sway with Family Lumber. (more…)
