Its summer festival season, and as we’ve gone over before, that isn’t really that exciting because summer festivals are often expensive, far away and ultimately involve disappointingly watching ants play your favorite songs on a stage one mile away from where you are. However, people seem to be figuring out you can do this in Brooklyn and have it not be bad. Joining Northside and Out in the Streets, The Way Station is leading the, uh, way, in their neighborhood with a multi-venue, 75 band extravaganza this month called the Prospect Heights Music and Arts Festival. Finally, a music festival where you can cap off the night by visiting Neptune Diner at 3am. (more…)
Why we love it: It’s a great spot to stop in on any day or night of the week, but theykeep it fresh and fun with weekly activities, like trivia on Tuesdays, the new cocktail series “Wednesdays” and BYOV Thursdays. A projector screen comes in handy for the occasional movie night.
What to order: Pick from 8 rotating craft draft lines and a food menu of snacks and sandwiches, like a Dogfish Head pickle plate with mustard, or their take on the BLT, the “SALT” (speck, avocado, lettuce and tomato). Stay late and take the “Last Train Home,” their signature cocktail made with bourbon, bitters, Aperol and Baska snaps (Swedish bitters made from botanicals).
Regular tip: Grab a seat by the window for some prime Crown Heights people watching.
The crowds at these parties will be just as cool, don’t you worry
The Academy Awards are here again, which means it’s time to get all dolled up and watch with baited breath as Leonardo DiCaprio wins nothing. But what if you’re, ironically, a starving actor with no TV? Or if you’re just someone who needs someone to grab onto if things start getting too wild? Whether you have strong opinions about the nominees for Best Live Action Short Film, or if you have no idea what Selma‘s about, here are places to watch selfie history unfold. (more…)
They might not like these ones, but what do they know?
In case you haven’t noticed, Brooklyn has a bit of a love affair with all things old timey, vintage and otherwise out of its time. This of course extends to drinks, so we’re surprised it’s taken a bar this long to decide to do a tribute to The Old Fashioned itself. The long wait is over though, because tonight, The Saint Catherine is kicking off their new cocktail series, “Wednesdays” with a salute to the drink by making some twists on the usually simple mixture of four ingredients (whiskey, sugar, bitters, and an orange peel) each named after a different Golden-Age Starlet. Hey, not to be nosy or anything, but how’s your Beer Book adventure going? You’ve got less than 60 days to finish one, or both of them off, so if you’ve ever wanted to really push your casual alcoholism, now is the time. Especially if you haven’t used your coupon for The Saint Catherine (660 Washington Avenue), because beyond being a cool bar to spend time at, they now have $1 meatloaf sliders during happy hour. Don’t have a beer book coupon for the Saint Catherine? Go anyway, it’s $1 sliders! (more…)
Investigating a murder is very serious business. Also very, very weird business.
It’s August, and all of your richer friends are leaving town for vacations to here there and everywhere. Not you, you’re poor. You can still travel, sort of though. You can travel to small, simple town full of mountain air, where the locals are involved in shady casino operations and the homecoming queen is found murdered, her body wrapped in plastic. We don’t know why you’d want to go there, but you can visit the town of Twin Peaks, Washington, when The Saint Catherine (660 Washington Avenue, Prospect Heights) starts screening the eponymous show episode by episode on Sundays, starting with this Sunday, August 3. You can use that smart brain of yours to win stuff like cheese at The Saint Catherine’s trivia night. via Facebook
You can pretty much find trivia any night of the week in Brooklyn. Sure it’s great to win a round or two of drinks, but sometimes we want to feel like we’re on a game show and take home a grand prize—besides a hangover. Here are eleven bars that offer more than a bar tab. (more…)
Why have one Lillet Rose when you could have two? via The Saint Catherine
Our love for The Saint Catherine is well-established, what with the a whole post declaring it loudly. Still, there’s always room to love a place more, especially if they do something like make it much easier for you to drink your weekend away. And what do you know, The Saint Catherine is doing that, with an email they sent alerting us to the fact that they’re offering two-for-one specials on their brunch cocktails starting this weekend.
