Now when you get in a cab to go home, you can just point at your shirt! It’s almost summer, allegedly, even if the best you can hope for from the weather right now is freezing your ass off in Citi Field’s cheap seats. Summer, of course, means going to thrift shops and finding basketball jerseys to wear both because they are comfortable and because they’re still timely, because the NBA playoffs last until around August or it feels like that anyway. Outfitters are people, my friend. For anyone with actually had doubts, Urban Outfitters revealed itself as just another heartless corporation when this whole donating-to-Santorum controversy popped up a ways back. Now the hipster Walmart has eschewed Che Guevara in lieu of a new T-shirt mascot: Mitt “Americia” Romney. This line of Romney shirts would be some mawkish form of irony (UO’s bread and butter) were the election over, much like this Nixon tee, but with the heat still on and the outcome unclear, is there any other way to interpret the wearing of it as an endorsement of Mittens? Our feelings about Brooklyn Industries are forever mixed, particularly because of this very non-Brokelyn priced travesty, but this is a bit of karma for the company in a positive direction: the trendy clothier has started selling a shirt to support the Brooklyn Public Library. Non-ironic '70s kids' pants: 3 for $25. Those who thought Canal Jeans had vanished from the city’s radar in 2002 were only partially right. Since the Broadway location shuttered, it’s no longer a closet-refilling station for NYU students and New Jersey high-school kids dying to land “most individualistic” in their class superlatives. (Do they still have those?) But Canal Jeans, or at least an intriguingly decrepit version of it, lives on behind the Target on Nostrand Avenue, and it remains a place where the adventurous budgeteer could come away with a bag full of finds, if not an afternoon’s amusement.
