This Greenpoint laundromat charges double to wash your filthy Trump clothes

It’s been three months since the election and we’ll still probably never get used to seeing the occasional Make America Great Again hat on the subway. Its presence seems like a glitch or a fleck of dirt on your laptop screen you keep trying to rub away. Greenpoint in particular is not exactly a hotbed of Trump support, but if you do see any Trump-boosting clothing, you can take pleasure in knowing they might be very dirty.

Greenpoint’s joke-loving, pinball-obsessed Sunshine Laundromat has posted the above sign, which I spotted last night, pledging to add a 100 percent surcharge on any laundry containing the Trump name, and donate an equal amount to the American Society for Muslim Advancement. This sign is more joke than threat: it’s doubtful any Trump fans are coming into the pinball speakeasy laundromat in Greenpoint, or if this would actually even be legal (and there are lots of other laundromats nearby anyway). But it’s a further sign of where we’re at as a country: first the bars revolted, then the bodegas took to the streets, then the restaurants took a stand, and now the laundromats are joining in. Nutcracker Salesman Against Trump can’t be far behind.  (more…)

Ever since they added a bar to their space to cater to the drinking populace of North Brooklyn, Greenpoint’s Sunshine Laundromat and Pinball has been making headlines almost weekly. It’s a practical date spot! It’s a uniquely vintage mainstay in a changing neighborhood! It’s one of the main reasons Chris Gethard didn’t move to LA! The laundromat made the news again this morning, when DNAinfo found that owner Pete Rose put Plan B and pregnancy tests in their vending machines, alongside the candy bars.

Apparently, Rose intended “purely for entertainment purposes.” He was browsing the aisles of CVS when, as he recalled to DNAinfo, “I saw [the PlanB] and thought, ‘That doesn’t belong in a vending machine,’ and so I bought some.”

Color me humorless, but I don’t get the joke. In fact, I think it’s a seriously great idea. There are tampon and pad dispensers in most public restrooms in America, and smart schools in NYC are going so far as to offer them for free to students. But bleeding into your underwear isn’t nearly as terrible (or difficult to resolve, I mean, it’s called toilet paper) as an unplanned pregnancy. So why shouldn’t we be able to buy Plan B in vending machines? (more…)

Dating! Who has the time, amiright? When I was single, I was constantly falling victim to a problem I started to call the second date vortex. First dates are fine and easy to find some time for — you just want to meet for drinks or whatever and do some spark reconnaissance. But the second date? That’s when you want to carve out some hours to get to know the person/do something non-basic, but who has the time? In this economy? With deadlines and television programs to live tweet, bike repairs to make, that stack of unread New Yorkers to tackle and a pile of laundry threatening to become sentient and drink all your beer while you’re away.

Well Valen Time is coming up, and seeing as multitasking is breaking through as the defining trait of our generation, we have a solution: multitask dating! We rounded up the most productive dates you can have in Brooklyn, where you can knock somethings of the errands list while still checking off some names on your tinder matches. (more…)

A Downtown soup dumpling spot is just one reason to kind of be okay with fall arriving. via Facebook

Well, fall has finally arrived, and everyone is reluctantly sliding into their light jackets. I won’t lie, I’m sad. Summer in New York is my favorite, even if it does mean the city smells like boiling garbage and the subway is a direct conduit to the molten center of the earth. But don’t despair, fall has it’s upsides – like cozy sweaters, colorful foliage and pumpkin spice everything. There’s also plenty to do in Brooklyn in the fall and you can do it without back sweat! Here are just a few of the reasons to look forward to autumn in Brooklyn, like restaurant openings, craft beer festivals and a spooky theme park. (more…)

Beer here

We’ve talked a few times how much we love Greenpoint’s Sunshine Laundromat, because how could you not love a laundromat that’s as much pinball arcade as washery? Right, you can’t. We didn’t think that Sunshine could get any better, but it turns out we were wrong, because the Wall Street Journal reports co-owner Pete Rose wants to start serving beer and wine there, turning the business into a laundromat/pinball/arcade bar. Which would be in the running for best business in New York City, much less Brooklyn. (more…)
