You’ve read enough Encyclopedia Brown to be able to figure out that the likely culprit in The Case Of The Disappearing Alcohol, including even your peanut butter cheesecake flavored vodka from 2013, is the person who lives in your apartment with you. This is probably the same person who still uses those hideous glass marble bongs and still values their flip-cup trophy. They might never outgrow their frequently intoxicated state of being, but at least you can steer them from beer pong to beer flights. Help them put the high in high brow with these gifts from the unique vendors at Williamsburg’s Artists & Fleas, open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am until 7pm. (more…)

There are moms who are fun, but then there are “Fun Moms.” We’re talking about the mom who does picklebacks at the bar, curses more than you and would never be caught dead making any dessert featuring breakfast cereal. She wants to rock the latest trends (often all at the same time). These gifts from the unique vendors at Williamsburg’s Artists & Fleas, (open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am until 7pm) will satisfy her desire to be “down” without completely embarrassing you in front of the new significant other you brought home for the holidays. There are some people in this world who spend more time in the office than at home and know more about their coworkers than their roommates. These are people who actually enjoy using words like “synergy,” “webinar” and “circle back” in everyday conversation. These gifts are for your friend who will answer a phone call from their boss at a funeral. We figure that you might want to gift something with a little more cheer than a bag filled with Pepto Bismol and No-Doze. Here are some options to show them you care about their upward career trajectory from the unique vendors at Williamsburg’s Artists & Fleas, open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am until 7pm. (more…)

As that one friend in grad school often tells you, the pursuit of knowledge often comes at the expense of self-care. If this year’s secret Santa exchange has got you asking “What do you get for the overachieving friend who has everything (and just enrolled in grad school, so is definitely not sleeping)?” we’ve got you covered. These gifts will be sure to soothe anyone who needs a little R&R, but is too zonked out (or broke) to make it happen.

Winter break is the perfect time to uncurl them from their 16-hour post-finals sleep. Let them wake up to your thoughtful gifts for relaxation and rejuvenation from these unique vendors at Williamsburg’s Artists & Fleas, open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am until 7pm. (more…)

Thinking about tree lightings in New York often triggers memories of that one time you intentionally (or unintentionally) got swallowed up by the tourist mosh pit around the Rockefeller Center tree. That’s not something you ever want to do again.

The Park Slope 5th Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) has the Brooklyn-based antidote. At their annual Small Business Saturday event, they will be lighting a (real) 22 ft. tall Christmas tree with yards on yards on yards of lights that you won’t need an electrical engineering degree to appreciate. The ceremony is from 6:30 p.m to 8 p.m. at JJ Byrne Park, at 5th Ave. and 4th Street, smack dab in the middle of events and discounts all up and down the avenue. And unlike a tree you keep in your fifth-floor walk-up, you won’t have to deal with mouse poop “presents” under the tree or thinking too deeply about the decaying object in your living room. (more…)

When the grass freezes over and droves of Brooklynites huddle indoors for the winter season, what’s a flea market to do? The Brooklyn Flea has been asking itself this question for a while now. Since moving out of their original location in the Skylight space at One Hanson in 2012, they’ve tried multiple venues for their winter market. First, they shacked up in a lofted space in Williamsburg near their outdoor market; then, they tried that warehouse on Dean Street connected to Berg’n. Finally, they opted for Sunset Park’s Industry City.

While they were valiant, none one of these attempts really stuck, and now NY Mag tells us the flea is moving (decisively, we hope) back into the iconic space at One Hanson — née Williamsburgh Savings Bank — in Fort Greene.  (more…)

national thrift store day

It seems only appropriate that August 15, along with being my mother’s birthday (once affectionately nicknamed the Coupon Queen by her loving family) is also National Thrift Store Day. While those of you with summer Fridays may be too fancy to get excited about 15-50% off donated, pre-used clothing and housewares, but for the rest of us this is cause for citywide celebration. plastic bag

Later, sucker

You’ve got all those tote bags in your apartment, millions of them really, but you always manage to forget them when you go out shopping. So you end up using paper or plastic bags, because hey, what harm can this one time do? Well, soon you might have to pay for your environment-killing ways, because a bill to put a ten cent fee on paper and plastic bags is in front of the City Council, and it has a good amount of support. Bet you’ll remember that PBS tote now. (more…)

What’s worse than ordering some totally sweet thing on the internet and then having to actually wait a few business days for it? Nothing, right? Literally nothing worse on Earth than that. That could be an argument against doing all our retail shopping online, but sometimes it’s snowing or raining or you’re sick and you still want to buy a book. And now the US Postal Service is here to help, expanding their pilot program for same-day delivery from retailers to New York. (more…)

Did you know that May is sample sale season? We didn’t either, but that’s probably because to us, even a sample sale means looking at all the Jeffrey Campbell shoes in a store window, going home and crying to ourselves over our bank statement. But if you haven’t already maxed out your credit card through 2014, you’re in luck: there are a whole bunch of sample sales hitting town over the next few weeks, and they are calling to you with a bevy of discounts and deals. Racked compiled a whole slew of sales, here are some of our favorites: (more…)
